Dutch Apple Cake

Full Recipe
  1. Combine apples, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar and nutmeg in a bowl; let stand for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 300° F.
  3. Grease a 9-by 5-inch loaf pan.
  4. In a large bowl, cream together butter, remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add eggs, one at a time, until incorporated; stir in vanilla.
  6. Gradually add flour and salt and beat until smooth.
  7. Transfer batter to the prepared pan; push apple slices vertically into batter.
  8. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  9. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack.
  10. Serve warm.
